Volunteers are the heart of each Network. Family Promise Interfaith Hospitality Networks enlist thousands of dedicated volunteers from the diverse congregations who form an IHN. Working in the familiar environment of their own churches or synagogues, volunteers do more than provide shelter and meals-they become an accepting support system to homeless families.
Some of the things IHN volunteers do include:
Share contacts for jobs and housing
Help write resumes
Prepare guests for job interviews
Donate clothing and furniture.
These supportive relationships often continue after families move into their own homes. Because of the involvement of these volunteers, over 70 percent of families we assist finds permanent housing.
"I've participated in all of the 'jobs' at one time or another, from setting up cots to cooking to sleeping over. Each job in itself is such a small commitment-cooking a meal for a handful of people once every few months, reading to children, or easiest of all, sleeping for eight hours. I cannot express the joy I feel knowing that in some small way I personally helped make life better for someone else." IHN volunteer, Denver, CO
