Welcome Affiliate #155: Nassau County, NY

Families sharing dinner at the first host week at Massapequa Reformed Church.Family Promise of Nassau County becomes our first affiliate in downstate New York. Long Island has a huge discrepancy between wages and housing costs—an individual would have to work 169 hours a week at minimum wage to afford a two-bedroom apartment at market rate. As a week comprises 168 hours, this gap has lead to a daunting housing crisis.

Nassau County began affiliate development way back in 2006. FPNC opens with 11 hosts and a day center at a house owned by Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in Mineola. They own a van and have already raised nearly their entire first year’s budget. The director is Jakki Silkiss, a social worker with longstanding experience in the New York shelter system.

Massapequa Reformed Church was the initial host. The first family served was a mother with five children. She had broken her foot and found that when she was able to return to work, her job was no longer available.

Welcome, Nassau County. It was a long struggle to get open, but well worth the wait!
