We are proud to welcome Family Promise of Lawrence, Kansas, our 136th Affiliate and the second in the Sunflower State.
The Affiliate is starting out with 11 host congregations. A house owned by Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church serves as the day center, and the church is also providing a van. The talented new director, Valerie Miller-Coleman, is an ordained United Church of Christ minister who has been working with an organization serving homeless children for the past few years, giving her an ideal mix of backgrounds for Family Promise.
A recent point-in-time survey of Lawrence shows 192 members of families with children who were homeless within the city, and the school district counts 110 homeless students. Existing shelters in the community fall far short of ideal in services for homeless families, so the Affiliate is poised to make a real difference. Its first guest family was a mom, dad and toddler who were welcomed by First Christian Church, the Affiliate’s first host congregation.
