Welcome to our newest Affiliate, serving the Wilmington area. They are our first Network in the state of Delaware, which becomes the 40th state Family Promise has a presence in.
This network was a long time coming, with efforts beginning in 2007. Early in 2009, eventual Board President David Glasscock stepped in and provided the organization and impetus to put them on the fast track. The end result is a network nearly fully funded at start up, with 13 hosts and a day center at St. James Mill Creek Episcopal Church. Grace Lutheran Church is the first host; fitting, as its pastor, Paul Lundmark, initiated development by looking to replicate a program he knew from his time in seminary in Philadelphia.
The director is Tamikah Gowans, who combines an MBA with a background in social services—she had been Director of Family Services for Habitat in Delaware. Northern New Castle County opened their doors on March 7 with the Delaware Governor Markel presiding, and two days later had their first family, a pregnant mom with three kids. They will have company soon, as the local suburban school districts have reported 100% increases in the number of homeless children in the county.
